VERTIGO Luxury Magazine had the honour to attend the offical grand opening of the 5-star hotel Royal Savoy Lausanne on 23 September 2016.
After a 5-year refurbishment programme and an investment of more than 120 million Swiss francs, the Hotel Royal Savoy Lausanne opened its doors again in November 2015. Bought over by the Qatari Barwa Real Estate holding, it was added to Katara Hospitality Group’s portfolio.
On 23 September 2016, the hotel celebrated its official inauguration showcasing its exclusive heritage and new splendour. In his opening speech, His Excellency Sheikh Nawaf bin Jassim bin Jabor Al-Thani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Katara Hospitality, said: “We are honoured to attend the official inauguration of the Royal Savoy Lausanne, a heritage hotel which reconnects to its former glory and opens a new chapter in the hospitality history of Lausanne. Katara Hospitality is known all over the world for its capacity to create real hotel jewels in the markets in which we operate. Today’s opening ceremony is further proof of our success in the luxury tourism sector.”
Alain Kropf, General Manager of the hotel, held the second speech. “After a long period of development and construction, we are very proud to reopen the legendary Hotel Royal Savoy Lausanne,which was magnificently renovated and repositioned as a 5-star hotel”, he said.
The official programme began with the laying of the temporary capsule, a historic and symbolic moment in the history of the Royal Savoy Lausanne. Mr. Hamad Abdulla Al-Mulla (CEO of Katara Hospitality), Mr. Bruno H. Schöpfer (General Director The Bürgenstock Selection), Mr. Alain Kropf (General Manager Hotel Royal Savoy Lausanne), Mr. Marc Haeberlin (Chef of the Royal Savoy Lausanne) and Ms. Natacha Litzistorf (Lausanne city councillor) took part in this important part of the ceremony by offering important documents and objects.
First opened in 1909, the Hotel Royal Savoy Lausanne attracted the European aristocracy and renowned personalities. For a number of years, the Royal Family of Spain lived in exile at the Savoy, while the King of Thailand was also a regular guest. Built in the Art Nouveau style, the hotel and its layout were a magnificent display of the finest materials, becoming an essential part of Lausanne’s historical heritage.
