The city of Lausanne (Switzerland) welcomes its guests with a new prestigious 5-star hotel: the Royal Savoy Lausanne, which celebrated its official inauguration on 23 September 2016.
After a 5-year refurbishment programme and an investment of more than 120 million Swiss francs, the Hotel Royal Savoy Lausanne opened its doors again in November 2015. Bought over by the Qatari Barwa Real Estate holding, it was added to Katara Hospitality Group’s portfolio.
VERTIGO’s editor-in-chief was invited to speak to Mr. Hamad Abdulla Al-Mulla, CEO of Katara Hospitality, at a round-table interview with three other journalists.
INTERVIEW WITH HAMAD ABDULLA AL-MULLA
Today, Katara Hospitality has reached a major milestone with the inauguration of the 5-star heritage hotel Royal Savoy Lausanne. How do you feel, Mr. Al-Mulla?
I’m happy and very proud to inaugurate the Royal Savoy. In 2011, we reopened the Schweizerhof Hotel in Berne. Today, we celebrate the inauguration of a special landmark hotel in the city of Lausanne. The historic building with its 101 rooms in the castle look was too small for us, therefore it was complemented by a new construction with 95 rooms and suites.
Mr. Alain Kropf was appointed general manager of the Royal Savoy Lausanne in 2014. He was born and raised in Lausanne. He told VERTIGO that one of his aims was to make the hotel accessible to Swiss people and Lausanne residents.
We are lucky and happy to have Mr. Kropf in our team. He knows the market, the city, the people and the culture. He is an added value. Our goals for the Royal Savoy Lausanne? We aim at attracting international guests from Europe, the US, China and the Middle East. Lausanne is not a small town, but an international city which welcomes millions of tourists every year.
Katara Hospitality develops the tourism sector in Qatar. The Katara Towers in Doha are one of your most ambitious projects. How do you intend to attract Swiss and European tourists to Qatar and what are your next projects?
In Qatar, we have three to four projects in the pipeline. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal any details, because we love to surprise the market. We are preparing ourselves for the 2022 FIFA Worldcup and the Qatar National Vision 2030.
