Schiaparelli welcomed its guests at the Palais Garnier Opéra in Paris on 21st January 2019. It was the first show of the haute couture week. Florea Ursae Majoris: Dream of Star’s Flowers, the new couture collection created by Bertrand Guyon, is a tribute to Elsa Schiaparelli’s childhood.
She was an imaginative, independent little girl overflowing with creativity. Giovanni, Elsa’s uncle, is most likely the one who found her lucky star as he studied the galaxy in his observatory in Brera, Milan. He noticed an abundance of freckles on Elsa’s cheek, and compared it to the Ursa Major constellation. These beautiful memories of astronomy, and of the flowers that filled her carefree days of child’s play in the gardens of the Palazzo Corsini, would stay with Elsa throughout her career.
With her profound love of nature and the botanical world, Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1973) illuminated her salons of Place Vendôme in Paris with stars, cosmos, floral compositions and bouquets like a leitmotif, long before the days of the Surrealists. As Elsa said herself “To have a face covered in flowers, like a heavenly garden, would indeed be a wonderful thing!”
