DE NIRO TO ATTEND MARRAKECH FILM FESTIVAL

After a break of two years, the Marrakech Film Festival will roll out the red carpet for its 17th edition from 30 November to 8 December 2018. Two Hollywood stars have confirmed their presence at the international event: Robert De Niro (75) and Robin Wright (52).

The Marrakech Film Festival was launched in 2001 on the initiative of King Mohammed VI of Morocco (55). Marrakech, the capital of the great Moroccan dynasties since the period of the Almoravids and Morocco’s opening to North Africa and Andalusia, was chosen because it has the infrastructure to host an international event. French film producer Daniel Toscan du Plantier (1941-2003) combined his vision with that of his Moroccan partners and agreed to lead the team that organized the first edition of the Marrakech Film Festival. The primary objectives of the event were showcasing quality cinematographic works, thereby contributing to the artistic evolution of world cinema, the development of the Moroccan film industry, and the promotion of Morocco’s image throughout the world. After Toscan du Plantier passed away, his wife Melita Toscan du Plantier headed the Marrakech Film Festival from 2003 to 2016.

US Film director and screenwriter James Gray (49) has been appointed president of this year’s jury.
