PADMAAVAT, A SPECTACULAR INDIAN TRAGEDY

Set in medieval Rajasthan, Padmaavat tells the story of Rajput king Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) and his beautiful queen Padmavati (Deepika Padukone) who attempt to save their centuries-old kingdom from Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh), the ambitious Sultan of Delhi who wants to possess Padmavati and dominate India. When Khilji triumphs, queen Padmavati chooses self-immolation over subjugation.

The sumptuous palace interiors and classically inspired music and dance scenes of Padmaavat lend elegance to the film and take the viewer to a fantasy world.

A year before being released, the film caused a lot of controversy in India. Rumours that the film features a love scene between Padmavati and the Muslim conqueror Khilji lead to blanket security at premieres in India. The director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been attacked, sets have been vandalised and hardliners have threatened to behead Deepika Padukone. Hardliners  have even pleaded with the supreme court and prime minister to ban the film. The alleged romance and the trailer of the film have been interpreted as deeply dishonourable to queen Padmini, who is especially revered by Rajputs, one of India’s largest caste groups.
