Nemo was born on 3 August 1999 in Biel, a small bilingual town (German/French) in Switzerland.
Nemo grew up as a boy, but in November 2023 he came out as non-binary and asked to be addresses as they/them. A non-binary person like Nemo, Demi Lovato, Emma Corrin or Sam Smith is someone who does not identify as exclusively a man or a woman.
During the ESC votes, Nemo was constantly holding the non-binary flag. In the weeks that followed the ESC, there were hardly any news about the artist except for the fact that Nemo announced their intention to meet with Swiss Justice and Police Minister Beat Jans to discuss the possibility of introducing a third gender identity in Switzerland.
According to Der Spiegel, Germany’s most prestigious magazine, Eden Golan, the brave 20-year-old Israeli singer who was confronted with an unprecedented display of hatred, mobbing and anti-Semitism at the ESC, said: “I wanted to congratulate Nemo on their victory, but they ignored me.”
Nemo is not a stage name, but their real name. Their family name is Mettler.
At the age of three, Nemo started to take violin classes. Nemo also learnt to play the piano and the drums as a child.
In 2016, Nemo became famous among Swiss youngsters after taking part in a rapper contest SRF Virus Bounce Cypher, which went viral on social media (video).
In 2015, Nemo released the EP «Nemos Clownfisch» and a year later «Momänt-Kids». 7 songs of those two EPs made it directly onto the official Swiss Singles Chart.
Nemo currently lives in Berlin, Germany. The 24-year-old artist is in a long-standing relationship with a woman. They keep their relationship private.
Thanks to Nemo’s triumph in Malmö, the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 will take place in Switzerland, most probably in Zurich, the financial capital of the country.
Nemo, Switzerland’s new shooting star, had 392’000 Instagram followers on 12 May 2024, two weeks later 464’000.
