HR Giger (1940–2014) is an artist I would have loved to interview for our international magazine. He was not only one of the greatest Swiss artists, but also a pioneer who invented the most spectacular alien for a Hollywood movie. When Alien by Ridley Scott hit theaters in 1979, the evil on screen was unlike anything moviegoers had ever seen. The parasitic Xenomorph was terrifying and grotesque, yet graceful and beautiful. In 1980, Giger won an Academy Award for Best Achievement for Visual Effects for Alien. 37 years later, a Swiss luxury watch manufacturer pays tribute to this amazing artist by launching the Alien Luxury Watch by HR Giger.
The exclusive men’s timepiece In Memoriam HR Giger was the last project on which the artist collaborated with Swiss watchmaker Daniel Strom. Its case features heads and skull parts taken from Giger’s human/machine figure Biomechanoid. The dial forms a spectacular relief in silver that is modelled after one of the artist’s most famous works.
