I’ve been working as a beauty editor for ten years, but nevertheless I find it extremely difficult to find a good foundation that matches my skin tone, looks natural and lasts for hours. I get to test a lot of foundations, but believe it or not, I have to give 80 percent of them to friends and relatives because the texture is cakey, it makes my skin shine after an hour or the colour doesn’t match my fair skin (it is similar to the one of Cate Blanchett, but some of the “clever” PR ladies who have seen me send me foundations for Asian or even black women). This spring, I tested the world’s most expensive foundation. Curious to know more about it?
REVIEW LA PRAIRIE SKIN CAVIAR ESSENCE-IN-FOUNDATION
I was asked to review a new La Prairie foundation that will be available from 17 May 2018: Skin Caviar Essence-in-Foundation, the first compact foundation infused with caviar water. I presented the cushion foundation to our online readers ten days ago in an article. According to La Prairie, “this potent fusion of caviar science and colour artistry leaves skin with a refined texture, while buildable light-to-medium coverage offers a seamless, natural-looking finish”.
In Switzerland, the retail price of La Prairie’s new product is CH 225 (approximately $230), which makes it the most expensive foundation in the world.
I TESTED THE WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE FOUNDATION
The box contains two products: a big Skin Caviar Essence-in-Foundation compact in silver and dark blue (great design) and a separate refill. Both products come with a pad. The compact features quite a big mirror, which I find very practical, especially for travels. Push the pad on the cushion and the net-diffusing system releases just the right amount of foundation to apply on your face.
Application: The application of the foundation is simple. If you’ve ever used a cushion foundation, you know how it works. Press the pad on the brown circle and apply the foundation on your face.
Coverage: The cushion foundation gives me a beautiful light-to-medium coverage. Please note that for La Prairie’s new make-up product, you must have a beautiful skin. You won’t be able to cover dark spots, acne or large pores.
Colour: I tested La Prairie’s Essence-in-Foundation in Honey Beige NW-30. The colour is a little bit too dark and a little bit too yellow for women with a fair skin. I corrected it with a white moisturizing cream by Valmont and a white (colourless) mattifying compact powder by Yves Saint Laurent, but you can still see that the skin of my neck is lighter.
Retail price: CH 225 (approximately $230) for a compact, two foundation cushions (2 x 15 ml) and two pads
Result after three hours: The skin looks great, but I recommend a mattifying base on forehead, nose and chin if you’ve got a combination skin.
Result after seven hours: I’ve used a blotting paper on my t-zone in the meantime. The foundation still looks great.
Conclusion: Skin Caviar Essence-in-Foundation by La Prairie is a great cushion foundation, provided you find a shade that perfectly matches your skin tone (the foundation comes in eleven shades). I always use a shine stopper on my t-zone before applying this foundation. I like the fact that the compact, which is a beautiful object of design, is refillable. Make sure to wash the pad with soap after each application or to clean it with alcohol to avoid bacteria.
WHICH IS MY FAVOURITE FOUNDATION?
An excellent foundation is a must for a great make-up. It’s the basis of a professional beauty look. The best foundation I tested in 2021 (I’ve got a combination skin) is Teint Couture Everwear by Givenchy, which costs approximately $52 in the United States and approximately 35 euros in Europe.
