“I want to walk into a room, be it a hospital for the dying or a hospital for the sick children, and feel that I am needed. I want to do, not just to be.” Lady Diana Spencer, who became Princess of Wales at the age of 19 when she married Prince Charles, was so much more than a style icon and the most popular member of the British royal family. She was a diligent fundraiser who was linked to more than 100 charities. She advocated against landmines in Angola and shook hands with leprosy patients on her first visit in Indonesia. She also opened Britain’s first Aids ward in London and became patron of Centrepoint, a charity that helped homeless people off the streets.

Expectations were high when Netflix announced the launch of The Crown Season 4 and its new characters Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana. Who would play Britain’s queen of the heart? Would the actress be the spitting image of Lady Di? Would she have a similar voice?

Princess Diana is played by Emma Corrin, a 24-year-old British actress.

In real life, Emma looks more like Jodie Foster in her twenties.

Emma is a newcomer. In July 2019, she appeared as Esme in the 10-part series Pennyworth.

In March 2020, Emma made her debut film appearance in Misbehaviour, a historical drama film which follows the story of a group of women from the Women’s Liberation Movement seeking to disrupt the 1970 Miss World beauty competition in London. Cast for a minor role as Jillian Jessup, the Miss South Africa contestant, Emma starred alongside Keira Knightley, Keeley Hawes and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

In November 2020, her role as Princess Diana in the Netflix series The Crown introduced her to a worldwide audience.

In an interview with Netflix, Emma admitted that she had been a fan of The Crown‘s season 2 and 3. She said: “I actually do remember the first time I ever watched and episode of The Crown, I was in Uni in second year and my friend from school messaged me saying ‘Emma you’ll love this series’. I remember I was short with work, but I was like okay, I’ll watch an episode. And I don’t think I stopped watching, I think I had to watch the whole series, I was obsessed.”

In the same interview, Emma said: “I play Diana from around 16 – 28 years old and her arc is incredible. People will get to see a whole new side of her. I think that she had this way of giving herself so completely in everything that she did and so she appeared to everyone as this tower of strength and love even when she was arguably suffering.

The young actress did her research of Princess Diana by watching the Netflix documentary Diana: In Her Own Words. Emma said: “I worked a lot with the dialect coach on her voice, was a key part of her and the movement coach as movement really helps characterisation as we spent a long time on how she moved through the worlds, how she would stand in a doorway. Those little details helped so much to make it less scary. It is a huge responsibility and also a huge honour.”

Emma has 222’000 followers on Instagram.

In The Crown Seasons 5 and 6, Princess Diana will be played by Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki.

The wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana gives cause for great celebration in the country, but behind closed doors, the Queen watches as the marriage deteriorates…a deterioration which she knows threatens the monarchy itself.

On 28 February 2021, Emma Corrin won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series – Drama for playing Princess Diana in The Crown. Her co-star Josh O’Connor, who portrays Prince Charles, won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series – Drama.
