THE MOST FASHIONABLE NETFLIX SERIES 2020

“I am going to be a great actress,” said Vivien Leigh before she rose to fame with her role as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind (1939). The same credo applies to a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers in post-World War II Hollywood as they try to make it in Tinseltown – no matter the cost. In Hollywood, a new Netflix series by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, each character offers a unique glimpse behind the gilded curtain of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Provocative and incisive, Hollywood not only spotlights an unfair system and biases across race, gender and sexuality, but also highlights the glamour, the fashion codes and the beauty trends of that era. Welcome to the most fashionable Netflix series 2020.

MEN’S COSTUMES INSPIRED BY JAMES DEAN AND MARLON BRANDO

Jack’s (David Corenswet) costuming was primarily inspired by James Dean and Marlon Brando.

Each character had a specific color palette that guided their costuming. Archie (Jeremy Pope) is often sporting gold tones, and Raymond (Darren Criss) wears lots of pink shades.

The costume design was heavily influenced by the early twentieth century costume designer Adrian, and a series of famous photographs from the 1940s taken by a young Stanley Kubrick.

CLAIRE WOOD: FROM MARILYN MONROE TO VERONICA LAKE

Samara Weaving, who plays the rich Claire Wood, received an audition for a secret project and was given a scene to read from the 1959 film Some Like it Hot. She went “full Marilyn Monroe” for the reading, and found out two months later that she had booked a Ryan Murphy show.

During early discussions about the character, Ryan Murphy described Claire as a “spider”. Weaving worked with the costume design team to give Claire’s wardrobe an insect vibe – lots of red and black hues, and dotted patterns.

Claire’s hairstyle is inspired by a glamour queen of the Forties: actress Veronica Lake.
