Tokyo is the narrator and one of the main characters of the Netflix series La casa de papel, known as Money Heist in English.

Money Heist is Netflix’s biggest success outside of the United States. It has cult status and its leading actors have become superstars. Money Heist Season 5 premiered internationally on Netflix on 3 September 2021.

The look of Tokyo is inspired by Mathilda, one of the main characters of Luc Besson’s action thriller film Léon: The Professional (1994). Mathilda, played by Natalie Portman, is a 12-year-old girl from a dysfunctional family who learns the skills from hitman Léon (Jean Reno) to avenge the murder of her brother (see the trailer below).

Tokyo is played by Úrsula Corberó, a Spanish actress who was born in Barcelona on 11 August 1989.

At the age of 13, she began taking acting, vocal and singing classes. In 2002, she landed he first role in the Catalan soap opera Mirall trencat. In 2005 and 2006, she played Sara in the Catalan soap opera Ventdelplà (video).

In order to work full-time as an actress and to go to castings, she moved from Barcelona to Madrid at the age of 17. She stayed with an aunt.

In 2007, she landed a few minor roles in Spanish TV series. In 2008, she got a leading role as Ruth in the Spanish teen series Física o química. She appeared in six seasons (video).

From 2011 to 2016, she appeared in several Spanish TV series (e. g. Isabel, La Embajada) and movies (e. g. Perdiendo el norte).

In 2017, she finally made the breakthrough with her role as Tokyo (Tokio in Spanish) in Money Heist. It premiered on the Spanish channel Antena 3. La casa de papel was initially intended as a limited series to be told in two parts. Netflix acquired global streaming rights in late 2017. It re-cut the series into 22 shorter episodes and released them worldwide in December 2017.

“The shooting of Money Heist is very intense and requires a lot of physical effort,” said the 31-year-old actress in an interview with El Periodíco. “The action is pure adrenaline. If you spend the whole day shooting on a set, it’s hard to fall asleep at night. There’s a lot of rock’n’roll in the series.”

The actors of Money Heist had to take shooting lessons for the series. “I was quite scared,” admits Úrsula. “Two hours after the shooting, my legs were still trembling. Alba Flores, who plays Nairobi, was much tougher. She had it much more under control.

The 31-year-old actress appeared in several ad campaigns for Calzedonia, Maybelline, Tampax, Springfield and recently Bulgari.

Úrsula Corberó has 19.2 million followers on Instagram. No other Money Heist actor has more Instagram followers than her.

She’s not married, but she’s in a relationship with Chino Darín, a 31-year-old Argentinian actor she met in 2016 on the set of the Spanish film La Embajada. Chino is the son of Ricardo Darín, Argentinia’s most famous actor.
