The Spanish movie Sounds Like Love (110 minutes) premiered on Netflix on 29 September 2021. The original title of the Spanish film directed by Juana Macías is Fuimos Canciones.
Maca is 29 years old, but she still doesn’t know who she really is and what she wants. She’s clumsy by nature, full of contradictions and doesn’t defend herself against her toxic boss Pipa, a fashion influencer. Moreover, Maca’s love life is a disaster, she contents herself with Coque, with whom she can’t even have a conversation.
Maca is played by María Valverde, a 34-year-old Spanish actress. She was only 16 when she won a Goya, Spain’s most important film award, for her role in La flaqueza del bolchevique. María has appeared in more than a dozen Spanish and foreign movies. She also starred in Cracks alongside Eva Green, and in Exodus: Gods and Kings alongside Christian Bale. Both films were directed by Ridley Scott.
Marías mother is a sculptor, her father a painter. In 2017, she married Gustavo Dudamel (41), a Venezuelan conductor and violinist who is the music director of three prestigious orchestras, amongst which the Opéra national de Paris. María has 1 million followers on Instagram.
The film is based on the novel Fuimos canciones by Elisabet Benavent (37). The Spanish author, also known as Beta Coqueta, is the author of the novel En los zapatos de Valeria, which was filmed for Netflix.
Elisabet Benavent is one of the most successful authors in Europe. In seven years, she published 20 novels and sold more than 2 million books. She has 358’000 followers on Instagram.
“Elisabet was very involved in the film project,” says actor Álex González. “But at the same time she gave the film crew a lot of freedom.”
Leo is a very attractive university professor who teaches literature in Madrid after having spent six years in Boston. And he’s also Maca’s biggest mistake of her life, the man who tore her heart apart and obliterated her self-esteem and her faith in men. They were in a relationship for five years, when all of a sudden he took a flight to Boston and never came back. He was a real coward. He left without saying anything to Maca while she was waiting for him with a real estate agent in a flat they wanted to visit in order to move in together.
After six years, Leo shows up at an event in Madrid and Maca’s life is turned upside down.
Leo is played by Álex González, who is considered one of the most handsome Spanish actors. He’s 41 years old, but he looks younger, which might be due not only to his DNA, but also to the fact that he’s constantly working out and doing sports. Álex has 1,6 million followers on Instagram.
In an video interview (see below), the actor said: “Working with María was great, I always admired her as an actress. I met her in the past, and it was like working with a friend. Leo is in love with Maca, but he wasn’t mature enough when they were a couple.”
Álex González is best known for his role as chief inspector Javier Morey in El Príncipe (2014/15) and for his role as Mario Mendoza in Vivir sin permiso (Unauthorized Living on Netflix). He also starred as a neonazi in the highly acclaimed Alacrán enamorado alongside Javier Bardem.
This fall, Álex González will star as a villain called El Turco in the Netflix show Toy Boy Season 2.
Álex Gónzalez is not married. According to Spanish tabloids, he’s in a relationship with María Pedraza, the ex girlfriend of Jaime Lorente, the actor who plays Denver in Money Heist. She appeared in Elite Season 1 and also had a small role in Money Heist Season 1. Álex González had relationships with various actresses, amongst which Adriana Ugarte, Chenoa and Olivia Munn.
The film features 28 songs, amongst which Ma soeur by Clara Luciani, Intoxicated by Martin Solveig & GTA, In Spain We Call It Soledad by Rigoberta Bandini, and Summer Sun by Koop.
Pau Castejón, the director of photography of Sounds Like Love, has created videoclips for Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish.
The film was shot in Madrid. The rooftop bar scene with Maca and Leo was shot at the restaurant Picalagartos which offers a spectacular view over the Grand Vía and Madrid.
