If you want to pimp up your Instagram account and at the same time pamper your skin, buy a few products of the most instagrammable beauty brand 2019: Benamôr. The Portuguese cult brand is known for exquisite handmade products, great quality and an amazing Art Deco design.
As a beauty editor, I had the chance to discover the Benamôr range at the launch event in Zurich in a beautifully decorated café. Frenchman Pierre Stark, one of three businessmen who acquired the company Nally, owner of Benamôr, in 2015, introduced me to the history of Benamôr and its products.
BEAUTY RECIPES MADE IN LISBON
Founded in 1925 in Lisbon by an apothecary who created miraculous ointments in his laboratory at Campo Grande 189, Benamôr was an instant hit, and all Lisbon Belles were addicts, including Queen Amélie, Portugal’s last queen consort. Benamôr’s best-selling products included Benamôr Créme de Rosto, the miracle face cream with rose extract, the Alantoíne hand cream and Bronzaline, Portugal’s first sunscreen.
Benamôr’s handmade beauty products are based on unique perfumes and natural ingredients grown under the sun of Portugal: lemon, rose, aloe vera and almond oil. They are packed in adorable Art Deco tubes.
AMÉLIE, A COLLECTION NAMED AFTER PORTUGAL’S LAST QUEEN CONSORT
Benamôr’s five collections feature an extraordinary Art Deco design and are associated to a different colour. “We combine our classic design with the functional enhancement. 80 percent of our tubes are made of recyclable aluminium,” says Pierre Stark. “We combine quality and tradition at accessible prices,” he adds. The original formulations are still used, though parabens have been removed from them. The collections feature a hand cream, a body cream or a body liquid lotion, a lip balm, a body butter, a shower gel, a soap, a liquid soap and gift sets. Three collections also feature a dry oil.
Alantoíne with its citric scent is Benamôr’s bestseller collection. It is named after allantoin, a classic vegetable ingredient used in cosmetic formulas since the early 20th century, which acts as a skin protector and emollient. Gordíssimo, the light blue collection, has shea butter at its core and nourishes the skin instantly, leaving it plumper and more moisturized. The delicately scented Jacarandá collection is named after Lisbon’s iconic tree that covers the city with its electric lilac bloom for only a few days each spring. Rose Amélie pays tribute to Queen Amélie of Portugal, who used her beloved Benamôr products not only in Lisbon, but even during her exile in France. It combines argan oil and gorgeously scented roses.
NATA AND THE SMELL OF DELICIOUS PASTRY
Nata, Benamôr’s latest collection, is inspired by Portugal’s most famous pastry: Pastel de Nata. And believe me, the products really smell of a freshly baked egg tart pastry dusted with cinnamon.
The Nata collection features a hand cream, a milky body cream, a dry oil, a lip balm and a beautiful gift set.

Pierre Stark, who had worked for 20 years for L’Oréal, first in France then in Portugal, where he was in charge of the group’s luxury division, acquired Benamôr in 2015 with two business partners.
In this video, he presents the Portuguese cosmetic brand in one of the three Benamôr kitchen shops in Lisbon.
